About
The Grindstone Lake Foundation was founded for the purpose of acquiring and rehabilitating a 57-acre tract of land—comprised predominantly of a cranberry bog—on the Grindstone Lake shoreland in Sawyer County, Wisconsin.
Mission
The mission of the Foundation is to steward the protection, restoration, and preservation of the tract of wetlands and create a community-supported nature area that is publicly accessible to Grindstone Lake residents and visitors.
Vision
Prior to purchase, the property operated as a cranberry farm, but has been inactive for sometime. The Foundation secured the land to ensure it was not developed upon. We now seek funding to sustain ownership of the land, restore the area to wetlands, and create an educational ecological preserve, helping to ensure the protection of Grindstone Lake and its sister lakes downstream.
A Place Abundant
As stewards of this vital tract of land and Grindstone Lake, we seek to:
• Protect the environment around Grindstone Lake
• Restore the tract of land from cranberry bog to its original wetlands state
• Preserve the lake’s natural ecosystem
• Protect native aquatic plants and animals from the adverse effects of the former bog
• Inform residents and visitors of restoration efforts and ways to get involved
• Ensure public access to the land
• Create educational and eco-recreational opportunities
• Educate visitors on the history of the site and the impact of commercial bogs
• Improve and enhance the surrounding community
